Cal Winning - Karateka at JMAC

About Cal

I have a background in animation, graphic design, and tech and currently work as an IT specialist. Hobbies-wise I like to collect vinyl records and do photography.

Athletic and Martial Arts Background

Prior to coming to JMAC I had trained in Taekwondo as a child for several years before starting a long hiatus when I was about 13. At the time I was a Second Degree Junior Black Belt in rank.

Path to JMAC

I had been thinking about returning to martial arts for a while. My physical and mental health weren't where I wanted them to be, so in 2022 I finally made the decision to get back into training and wanted to give myself a fresh start. While doing some research I came across JMAC and ticked all of the boxes for what I was looking for.

Favorite Aspects of JMAC

One of the greatest parts of JMAC to me is the community. The willingness of everyone at JMAC to help support one another and build each other is genuinely awe inspiring. I've made so many great friends here and it's a community I'm incredibly proud to be a part of, and all of that is on top of incredible training opportunities with phenomenal mentors and instructors.

Ongoing Challenges in Training

I've had my share of health issues and sports injuries over the years, so one of the biggest challenges for me, even outside of JMAC, is figuring out how to build myself back up to be where I want to be physically. JMAC has given me a place to make myself stronger, both physically and mentally, pushing me to make myself better while also understanding fully when I've pushed myself to my current limits.

Positive Changes and Growth Since Starting at JMAC

I've come a long way from where I started. I still have a lot of work to do, but I've come a long way on strengthening myself physically, getting into better shape,  and working to rebuild from my sports injuries.

A Note of Appreciation

I wouldn't be who I am right now without JMAC. The school and its community have had such a profound, positive impact on me that I can't understate. I'm incredibly thankful to the instructors, mentors, and friends I've had the honor of meeting during my time here.
